Our editors have stayed anonymously in representative hotels from a variety of small hotel groups and associations. Here are our recommendation for particular categories:
Nature Retreats
Canticum Hotels: Distinctive small hotels and inns of high quality that also pass muster for culinary standards, and offer a scenic natural location.
Relais du Silence: European association of small hotels offering bucolic or natural locations, away from noise and bustle, though often near to town or cities.
Rusticae: Spanish association of small hotels, most with rural or natural locations
Great Cuisine
Relais & Chateaux: Grouping of luxury hotels and restaurants that serve haute cuisine, often in French style
Canticum Hotels: Member hotels, rather than those on the "recommended" list have passed independent standard for culinary excellence
"Luxury"
Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH): Association of hotels with minimum standards for luxury, usually with attendant restaurants of good to high quality.
Leading Hotels of the World: With members both large and small, and generally of true luxury quality and service.
